Painting
Portrait of a Nigerian Woman
Esther Grainger (1912-1990)
The 4th Merthyr St Matthias Treharris Scouts have completed a creative heritage project called 'Voice Figures' in order to earn their Local Knowledge and International Women’s Day badges. The project takes inspiration from Margaret 'Megan' Watts Hughes, whose remarkable Voice Figures form part of the collection at Cyfarthfa Castle. Just as Hughes used the power of her voice to create visual art, the Scouts used their own voices to imagine, interpret, and record new stories inspired by the portraits of women displayed throughout the castle. You can find their observations about her portrait in the recordings below. ***Rights reserved by the copyright holder.***
